MP asks politicians to appreciate mothers
Mrs Freda Prempeh, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North Constituency, has advised Ghanaians, especially politicians, to appreciate mothers and show compassion to widows in their old age.
She noted that most mothers went through hell in ensuring their children had proper upbringing and development to occupy enviable positions in politics and other areas of life.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to mark the international Mothers Day celebration, Mrs Prempeh said people who avoided their mothers and failed to care for them, especially in their old age, were wrong.
“Mothers do not only build families but also contribute tremendously in all spheres of life even though many of them are affected by economic, social and traditional issues,” the MP said.

She urged the public not to only appreciate their biological mothers but also ensure that every woman who had played the role of a mother in their lives was recognised.
Mrs Prempeh commended mothers, particularly those who are widows and single parents, for their hard work and immense contribution and support for their families and the society at large.
She asked politicians to spend time with their mothers and entreated those who had problems with their mothers to reconcile with them as soon as possible.
The MP noted with regret that some people avoided their aged mothers because of the wrong perception that they were witches, and that if such mothers were widows then their situations became worse.
Witchcraft, Mrs Prempeh explained, had no social class and stressed the need for Ghanaians to erase such wrong perception from their minds.
The observance of the International Mothers Day, which dates back to 1908, has its root in the United States of America, particularly Philadelphia. It could also be traced to the United Kingdom where Mothering Sundays are held every year in honour of mothers. — GNA
