Former NPP Chairman Odoi -Sykes passes on

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes, has died at the age of 87.

Mr Odoi-Sykes, a lawyer, diplomat and former Member of Parliament for Ashiedu Keteke, died on Monday, October 5, 2026, according to a statement issued by his family.

His death has attracted tributes from members of the NPP, including the party’s flag bearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a Facebook post, Dr Bawumia described Mr Odoi-Sykes as a founding member of the NPP who “holds an honoured place” in the party’s history.

He said the late politician led the party to its first general election victory in the Fourth Republic in 2000 and served both the party and country with distinction.

“His service to Party and country will long be remembered,” Dr Bawumia said, while extending his condolences to the bereaved family.


Political career

Mr Odoi-Sykes served as NPP National Chairman from 1998 to 2001. During his tenure, the party won the 2000 presidential and parliamentary elections.

He was MP for Ashiedu Keteke from 1979 to 1981 and served as Minority Leader in 1980. He later served as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada from 2001 to 2006.

Dr Bawumia ended his tribute: “Farewell, Chairman. May your soul rest in perfect peace.”

NPP

The NPP, in a statement signed by National Chairman John Boadu, also described Odoi-Sykes as “one of the founding pillars” of the party whose leadership and service helped shape Ghana’s democratic development.
