Bawumia responds to Mahama over cedi re-denomination
The vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has described President John Mahama's request for the disclosure of the cost of the re-denomination of the cedi in 2007 as a "demonstration of incompetence".
President Mahama on Tuesday on a campaign platform in Accra challenged Dr Bawumia to disclose the cost of the exercise because as President, [Mahama] he is still not aware of the cost.
"Do we remember the cedi re-denomination under President Kufuor? During that time, someone [Bawumia] was the Deputy Bank of Ghana Governor and up till now, even I as a President do not know the cost of the re-denomination exercise.
"Up till today, no Ghanaian knows the cost of the re-denomination exercise and the same people come and say someone is incompetent. When you re-denominated the cedi, how much did it cost us? Simple things like these you cannot tell us and you have the nerve to come and talk about corruption. Look in the mirror and look at yourselves,” President Mahama said to a partisan crowd.
In a response to the President, Dr Bawumia in a Facebook post titled: "Mr. President, care to read?" said the president could simply have his vice president, Kwesi Amissah Arthur who was at the time the Governor of the Bank of Ghana if he really wanted to find out about the cost of re-denomination.
He added that such petty propaganda was beneath the stature of the resident who was poorly briefed.
Dr Bawumia also challenged the President and his Economic Management Team to respond to his 170 statements on the "Real state of the economy".
