"You will be removed" - Mahama tells 'corrupt' judges
President John Dramani Mahama has assured that criminal proceedings would be initiated against judges who are found guilty of talking bribes following the exposé by investigative Journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The President gave the assurance in an interview with the french television network, France 24 on Tuesday as part of a three-day official visit to France.
The Judicial Service has initiated disciplinary proceedings against 34 judges who have been caught on video allegedly taking bribes to subvert justice.
Apart from the judges, about 100 staff of the judicial service and police personnel were also caught in the video taking bribes in the two-year undercover investigations initiated by Anas.
According to President Mahama, a prima facie case has been established against seven judges, mainly from the high court and investigations are still ongoing.
"If they are found to be culpable, they will be removed from the bench and any other criminal proceedings that should be exercised will be done”.
Anas during his investigations came across 10 judges who refused to take bribes and even threatened to arrest him.
President Mahama praised the 10 judges and said there has been a focus on the scandal without focusing on the fact that there were at least 10 judges whose integrity were intact and threatened to call the police on this investigative journalist.
"This shows that there is some healthy fabric that we can grow. It also shows the robustness of our system, that we can deal with this,” the President said.
