VIDEO: Fire razes warehouse at University of Ghana Estate Block
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have successfully extinguished a fire that broke out at the Estate Block of the University of Ghana in Accra on Wednesday evening, February 26, 2025.
The Estate Block, located near the popular Bush Canteen, serves as a warehouse. According to DOI Alex King Nartey, who spoke in a video published on the GNFS Facebook page, the fire started at approximately 9 pm. However, firefighters swiftly brought it under control within an hour, using four fire tenders.
"Because of the gaseous nature of the substances there, we had to marshal tenders from Madina and Abelemkpe. The fire is 90% extinguished. We are now preventing further spread. We had four fire tenders at the scene," DOI Nartey stated.
He further revealed that the fire destroyed about 20 fridges, freezers, and spare parts stored in the facility.

The incident adds to the growing concern over frequent fire outbreaks across the country. Earlier this year, major fires ravaged the Agbogbloshie Market and the Kumasi Magazine, with several other minor incidents reported.
Data from the GNFS indicates a worrying trend in fire outbreaks. Between January and November 2024, a total of 5,596 cases were recorded—an increase of 6.43% compared to the 5,258 incidents reported during the same period in 2023.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the University of Ghana fire, but investigations are ongoing.
