Three suspected armed robbers grabbed

Three suspected armed robbers who allegedly blocked the Assin Edubiase and Assin Kwaata roads in the Central Region and robbed motorists and passengers of various items, including mobile phones and money, have been arrested.

Ali Osumanu, Haruna Eso, alias Jafara, and Amadu Osman, alias Shuda, who are currently assisting the police in investigations, were part of a six-member gang of suspected armed robbers of Fulani extraction. One of the escapees was later shot dead by the police while two others are still on the run.

One of the victims of the robbery attack, identified only as Bukari, later died of gunshot wounds.

 

Press briefing

At a press briefing in Accra, the Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, COP Mr Prosper Kwame Agblor, said on June 2, 2014 at about 11:30 p.m., the Assin Fosu District Police were informed of the robbery.

He said when the police rushed to the scene, the robbers fled into the bush.

According to him the police, therefore, circulated radio messages to all checkpoints within the jurisdiction to look out for the robbers.

Mr Agblor said one of the suspects, Osumanu, 18, was arrested on June 3, 2014 at a checkpoint while on a bus to Obuasi.

He said during a search on the suspect, 10 mobile phones and GH¢400 were found on him.

According to him, the owner of one of the phones called during an interrogation of the suspect to claim ownership of the phone and indicated that he was among a group of victims robbed on the Assin Foso road.

 

Suspect confesses

Mr Agblor said the suspect then allegedly confessed that he was a member of the group of six that attacked the motorists.

With the information gathered from Osmanu, Mr Agblor said the police on June 5, 2014 mounted an operation in Kumasi with the assistance of the Buffalo Unit which led to the arrest of the other two suspects.

 

Another development

In another development, the Ashiaman Police have  arrested five suspected armed robbers who have been operating around Ashaiman, Zenu, Gbetsile and Mataheko among other places.

They are Emmanuel Tsormemawu, alias Dead Body, 32, Dennis Kwabena Boakye, alias Asu16, Jonathan Dotse, alias Nasty, 16, Ibrahim Mustapha, alias Morale, 20 , and Mawuli Afaglo, alias Obolo, 17.
