Three killed in accident at Ekumfi Bogyano

Three people burnt to death on Sunday afternoon when the vehicle on which they were travelling was involved in an accident at Ekumfi Bogyano in the Central Region on the Accra-Cape Coast highway.

The accident, which occurred around 3 p.m., involved an unregistered Renault salon car with a DV number plate which was heading towards Cape Coast from Winneba and a Toyota RAV4 with registration number GT 2000-11, which was coming from the opposite direction.

According to police, the driver of the Renault, on reaching Ekumfi Bogyano, tried to overtake another vehicle but in the process collided with the RAV4 vehicle.

The Renault somersaulted, landed in a nearby bush and burst into flames.

Two male occupants, including the driver, were burnt beyond recognition. The third passenger tried to escape from the vehicle when it caught fire but was unlucky and also died.

The Saltpond District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) David Ashong, who confirmed the accident to the Daily Graphic, said the police received a distress call around 3 p.m., and quickly went to the scene together with the Ghana National Fire Service.

He said the two security agencies quickly cleared the road to restore order and prevent a traffic jam, since that stretch of the road was part of a major highway.

He said five passengers on board the Toyota RAV4 (three adults and two children) sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to the Winneba Government Hospital and the Cape Coast Regional Hospital for medical attention.

DSP Ashong added that the charred bodies of the deceased had since been identified by their families and had been deposited at the Saltpond Government Hospital awaiting the outcome of an autopsy.
