Tarkwa-Nsuaem assembly relaunches sanitation day

Hundreds of residents in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly in the Western Region have relaunched the National Sanitation Day (NSD).
They turned out to participate in a massive clean-up exercise at a special relaunch of the NSD, an initiative of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD).

The day for the exercise, which is meant to be voluntary, is the first Saturday of the month for all Ghanaian residents in an effort to reduce insanitary conditions that breed diseases in the country.

3-Hour exercise

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Mr Gilbert Ken Asmah, led the almost three-hour exercise with the support of the various security agencies, mining companies, financial institutions and waste management companies, including Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

The companies provided various tools and equipment to the assembly to help desilt choked drains and gutters.
They also cleared refuse dumps and bushes during the programme at the weekend.

Admonition

Later in an address, the MCE admonished residents to keep their environment clean and come out in their numbers to take part in subsequent NSD exercises.

He noted that a clean surrounding was a healthy way of life and, therefore, urged the people to desist from throwing rubbish and other waste materials onto the streets and drains as that was the main cause of flooding in the municipality and elsewhere in the country.

He gave an assurance that the assembly would provide dustbins and other waste collection equipment along the streets in the area to help reduce the accumulation of waste materials.

Human excreta

Mr Asmah again advised the residents to desist from dropping human excreta into the dustbins when they were provided to avoid the spread of cholera and other communicable diseases which in the end could claim lives.

The Municipal Environmental Officer, Mr Emmanuel Kudor, commended the participants for their massive turnout to support the exercise and also the various donors of the tools and equipment, saying the authorities would take very good care of them for continuous use.
