Aklorbortu wins two awards in a month

A Staff Writer of the Graphic Communications Group Ltd, Mr Dotsey Koblah Aklorbortu, has been adjudged the oil and gas reporter of the year at the sixth Ghana Oil and Gas Awards.

Mr Aklorbortu was awarded for his immense contributions in the form of reportage on the oil and gas industry.

In all, 11 individuals and 32 companies were awarded.

The Events Director at Xodus Communications Limited, organisers of the awards, Mr Richard Abbey Jnr, said the awards scheme was aimed at rewarding stakeholders in the industry who had demonstrated excellence in the industry.

He said the awards represented a cross-section of oil and gas stakeholders, ranging from the government, upstream, midstream, downstream, regulators, civil society, financial institutions, insurers among others.

The Deputy Minister of Energy, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has advised indigenous companies in the oil and gas industry to take advantage of the local content law and stop fronting for foreign-owned companies.

He said the announcement of three new oil discoveries this year would come with a lot of opportunities for the local companies and, therefore, urged them to position themselves to take advantage of the opportunities.

Dr Adam was speaking at the 6th Ghana Oil and Gas Awards (GOGA) which was held during the weekend.

“I have been told recently by the Petroleum Commission that Ghanaians are not prepared themselves for the opportunities ahead of us.

There is still so much fronting in the local content space.

“Local companies must prepare themselves, build their capacity and build strategic partnerships,” he stated.

“New discoveries have been announced which comes with lots of opportunities and if you continue to front, I am wondering when Ghanaians will take centre stage in the industry,” he added.
