National Chief Imam turns 97 : Calls for peaceful elections

Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharabutu, the National Chief Imam, has celebrated his 97th birthday at his residence at New Fadama in Accra.

The event, which was marked by the saying of special prayers for the Chief Imam, was attended by some prominent personalities from both the Islamic and the Christian divide.

They included the National Chief Imam of Senegal, Sheikh Mohammed Hassan Siicey, and Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, who represented President John Dramani Mahama.

The Chief Imam’s birthday fell on 7 May, 2016.

Advice

Sheikh Sharabutu used the platform to pray for a peaceful election on November 7 and urged representatives of the various political parties to conduct themselves in a manner that would not create any political tension and to go about their campaigns devoid of ethnicity and religious comments.

He also appealed to the youth to be tolerant by accepting divergent views from all parties and not to allow themselves to be used for unnecessary attacks that could plunge the country into chaos.

Congratulations

Mr Iddrisu, on behalf of the President, congratulated Sheikh Sharabutu on the occasion of his birthday and wished him long life and God's strength to enable him to continue his sermons which had deepened and contributed immensely to the growth of Islam and religious tolerance in the country.

Sheikh Siicey prayed for long life and good health for the Chief Imam and also urged the Senegalese community in Ghana to be law-abiding.
