The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office after voluntarily surrendering himself to assist with ongoing investigations.
In a news release issued on October 1, EOCO said the MP, who is also Senior Partner of Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners, reported to its headquarters at approximately 10:00 am.
His appearance follows several months of efforts by the Office to secure his attendance before investigators in connection with allegations relating to criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax-related offences, and other matters under investigation.
The Office subsequently commenced the applicable investigative and operational procedures, following which Mr Baffour Awuah was placed under arrest. He is currently cooperating with investigators as the process proceeds.
Background
The investigation concerns legal work carried out by the MP's former law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, for SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited in an attempt to recover millions of cedis from Equity Savings and Loans.
According to the MP's account, SIC Life Savings and Loans had invested approximately GH¢3.5 million with Equity Savings and Loans. Equity subsequently defaulted, and with accumulated interest, the obligation eventually rose to roughly GH¢14 million. His law firm was instructed to recover the money and eventually obtained summary judgment against Equity.
The recovery effort reportedly dragged on for about two years, during which Equity made payments amounting to more than GH¢1 million. A breakthrough came when the lawyers received information that Equity had land at Oyibi which could potentially be attached to satisfy the judgment. After litigation threats, a negotiated settlement was reached, with SIC recovering about GH¢8 million.
The development follows a High Court warrant issued on 30 September 2026 authorising EOCO to arrest the MP after the agency told the court it had exhausted reasonable means of securing his voluntary attendance.
An earlier attempt by EOCO officers to arrest the MP at the Accra High Court on 23 September resulted in a confrontation at the court premises.
EOCO assured the public that its investigations will progress professionally, independently, and in accordance with due process. The Office urged the public to allow the investigative and judicial processes to proceed without speculation or premature conclusions regarding the culpability of any individual.
