Mahama unveils AgriNext Programme to boost agriculture and industry
President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening the link between agriculture and industry by prioritising value addition, processing, and distribution.
He emphasised that this approach would position agriculture as a profitable and appealing sector, making it more attractive to the youth.
Mahama made this statement today while addressing Parliament in his first State of the Nation Address since assuming office on January 7, 2025.
To achieve this, he announced the launch of the AgriNext Programme, which aims to facilitate access to land banks for young farmers, connect graduates with opportunities in the agricultural value chain, and promote greenhouse farming among the youth. He stated that the initiative would benefit approximately 30,000 young people. He also highlighted the Livestock Development Project, which will help reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported meats by restocking breeding farms and increasing local livestock production, thereby creating jobs and boosting self-sufficiency.

Farmers service centres
Recognising the challenges farmers face in accessing mechanisation, quality seeds, fertilisers, and extension services, President Mahama announced plans to establish Farmers Service Centres in every agricultural district. These centres, he explained, would provide essential mechanisation services and resources to enhance efficiency and productivity.
Fisheries sector interventions
In the fisheries sector, President Mahama outlined strategic interventions aimed at enhancing productivity and sustainability. A key initiative, he noted, would be the continued fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which threatens marine biodiversity and fisherfolk livelihoods.
He emphasised that the government had intensified surveillance and monitoring operations by deploying modern technology and strengthening collaboration with key stakeholders. He also noted that in the past month, the government had expanded subsidies on premixed fuel to support artisanal and industrial fishers, ensuring affordability and availability.
Additionally, President Mahama announced plans to invest in modern fish landing sites and cold storage facilities to improve post-harvest handling, reduce losses, and enhance fish product quality.
