Likpe launches Lekoryi Festival
THE Lekoryi Festival of the chiefs and people of the Likpe Traditional Area has been launched in Accra.
This year's celebration of the festival on the theme: "Onward with sustainable development efforts in Likpe," is expected to come off on Saturday, March 26, at Likpe Mate in the Hohoe municipality of the Volta Region.
Launching the festival, the Paramount Chief of the Likpe Traditional Area, Nana Soglo-Alloh IV, said the celebration, which started in 1988 under the then Paramount Chief,
Nana Soglo-Alloh III, was put on hold for 20 years due to difficulties that were encountered by the planning committee of the festival until it was restarted in 2008.
He said the main aim of the traditional council in instituting the festival was to use it as a vehicle to develop the traditional area.
Nana Soglo-Alloh mentioned some development projects that had been undertaken such as the wiring of all basic schools at Likpe with assistance from Nexans Kabelmetal Company, upgrading of Likpe roads and the renovation of the Likpe Health Centre, which is to be upgraded to the status of a hospital.
"In preparation for the 2016 celebration, we have turned our attention to water for our people. We have mobilised our own funds to repair the broken-down equipment of the Likpe Community Water project and also cleared weeds that hold the water in the dam."
He, therefore, called on all citizens of Likpe to come to the festival, not only to enjoy themselves but to support and contribute to the development of the town.
Prof. A.Q.Q. Aboagye, Chairman of the Festival Planning Committee, outlined some of the activities that have been earmarked for the celebrations including the launch of the festival on February 5 at Likpe, a visit to the ancestral caves of Likpe on the Togo-Atakora Range of mountains on Saturday, March 5 and a marathon, cultural competition and some games on Holy Thursday, March 24.
Prof. Aboagye said Good Friday, March 25, would be used as Remembrance Day for ancestors of the Likpe Traditional Area to be climaxed with a grand durbar on Saturday, March 26 at Likpe Mate.
