Ghanaian peacekeepers from Mali decorated
One hundred and twenty-five Ghanaian Peacekeeping troops who participated in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), have been presented with their UN medals.
The all-male Ghana Engineer Company 1 (GHANENGCOY1 contingent, under the command of Major Ernest Nyuur of the 48 Engineer Regiment returned home early on this year without their medals after successfully completing their one year duty tour.
The troops returned home without their medals because the mission had to transit from African-led International Support Mission in Mali (AFISMA) to MINUSMA and by the time take-over processes were completed and the troops rotated the medals were not ready.
The presentation ceremony, held at the 48 Engineer Regiment, Teshie, Accra, was planned to coincide with the visit of the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Richard Opoku-Adusei, who decorated the personnel on parade after he had inspected a guard of honour mounted by personnel of the Unit.
He commended the personnel for raising the flag of Ghana high among other contingents in Mali and also for exhibiting a high standard of discipline without bringing the Ghana Armed Forces as well as the nation’s name into disrepute.
Major General Opoku-Adusei therefore entreated other peacekeepers to emulate the example of MINUSMA GHANENGCOY1.
