Ghana's COVID-19 deaths increase to 66, recoveries now 4,410

Ghana’s COVID-19 death toll has increased by eight, bringing the total number of deaths to 66.

The country has also seen an increase in the total case count with 397 new cases being recorded as at Wednesday, June 17.

This brings the total number of cases to 12, 590.

The number of recovered persons has also risen to 4,410, bringing the total number of active cases to 8,114.

Of the active cases, there are currently 13 persons in severe condition and four in a critical condition.

According to the latest figures released by the Ghana Health Service, 5,170 of the cases were from general surveillance.

Three-month-old baby dies

A three-month-old-baby is the youngest on record to have died of COVID-19.

The baby, who was transferred from the Savelugu Hospital to the Northern Regional Hospital last week, died moments after arrival.

Convalescent plasma treatment

Meanwhile, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has approved the use of convalescent plasma intervention for the treatment of critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Convalescent plasma (CP) is the term used for plasma that is removed from the blood of a person who has recovered from a disease, then transfused into a patient still battling it.

Researchers hope that CP can be given to people with severe COVID-19 to boost their ability to fight the virus. It also might help keep people who are moderately ill from becoming more ill and experiencing COVID-19 complications.
