Signing LGBTQ Bill will be my priority when elected — Bawumia

The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that one of the immediate interventions he will make when voted into power is to push for the immediate passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 (LGBTQ) into law.

"In fact, I won't hesitate to sign the LGBTQ Bill if I become President. I can't wait to put this behind us,” he said.

If passed, the bill would forbid and criminalise lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning and related activities, and provide protection and support for victims.

Event

Dr Bawumia, who is also the Vice-President, gave the assurance when he joined the congregation of the Believers Worship Center (BWC), at Kenyase, in the Kwabre East District in the Ashanti Region last Sunday.

He was accompanied by his running mate, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh. Others were the Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu; the Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

The visit formed part of Dr Bawumia’s 15-day campaign tour of the region.

Divine calling

The General Overseer of the Believers Worship Center, Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei Duah, lauded Dr Bawumia for publicly sharing his thoughts on LGBTQ.

"This is, indeed, a divine calling. Homosexuality does not have a space in our country," he said. Prophet Kyei Duah laid his hands on the presidential candidate, prayed extensively for him, and wished him and his team well as he climaxed his campaign in the region.

He appealed to voters to honour their constitutional mandate of casting their votes on December 7, saying that it was the only way to choose a leader for the country.
