Armed robbers attack Kwamang Rural Bank; Kill one banker
Suspected armed robbers who got wind that the Kwamang Rural Bank was going to receive money for this week’s transactions from the Bank of Ghana stormed the bank, killing one banker and causing injury to five customers of the bank at Kwamang in the Mampomg municipality in the Ashanti Region yesterday.
According to an eyewitness, the robbers, using a motorbike and wielding AK 47 assault rifles, fired warning shots to scare the bank staff, customers and the security men on duty before bundling them into the banking hall and demanded the cash that had been brought in.
When the robbers, who had covered their faces with hoods, realised that they had missed their target, they turned their attention to the customers and demanded their phones and cash amounting to GH¢800.
In the process, they fired indiscriminately, injuring five customers. They also shot an official of the bank, Mr Joseph Boateng Antwi, who had tried to escape.
According to the eyewitness, people outside the bank premises who saw the 30-minute melee had to run helter-skelter for their lives
After failing to rob the bank, the two robbers came out shooting indiscriminately and scaring people before speeding off on their motorbike.
Police
Confirming the robbery to the Daily Graphic, the Commander of the Nsuta District Police, ASP Charles Atuah, said the police got wind of the attack but when they got to the scene, the robbers had fled.
He explained that because there were over four main roads leading to Kwamang, the police had to dispatch men onto those roads and the adjoining villages.
He said the police had mounted a manhunt for the robbers and would not relent until they had been brought to book.
He urged the people of the area to volunteer information on any suspicious characters in their communities.
