AMA, KMA lead clean-up exercises to mark National Sanitation Day
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) marked this month’s National Sanitation Day (NSD) by clearing a huge pile of refuse and structures it had demolished in and around Avenor in Accra.
Business activities in the area virtually came to a standstill, as shops and other service delivery points were closed during the exercise.
Residents who joined in the exercise cleared choked gutters, swept and picked litter in the residential area.
Okoe Vanderpuije
The Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, tasked residents to not wait for the NSD before cleaning their surroundings.
That, he said, should be their contribution to make the community clean to forestall the outbreak of diseases and floods.

Dr Vanderpuije commended the residents for their turnout and urged them to allow the unity that was demonstrated during the exercise to continue.
He observed that one of the many sanitation challenges facing the community was open defecation and impressed on the residents to desist from the practice.
“Times have changed and we have to change the way we do things. Keep the community clean,” he urged them.
Kumasi
Emmanuel Baah reports that in Kumasi, the Coordinating Director of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Michael Ataogye, led some officials of the Waste Management Department of the KMA, personnel of Zoomlion, and the security services to clean the city to mark the NSD.
The team for the third time cleaned the Kumasi Central Market. They cleared refuse in the market, collected rubbish from the roads and pavements and cleared choked gutters.
Briefing the media after the exercise, Mr Ataogye said the sanitation team would continue to clean the central market.
