Al-Hassan Ligbi heads MMT
Mr Al-Hassan Ligbi, a transport and logistics expert, has been appointed as the new managing director of the Metro Mass Transit (MMT).
He takes over from Brigadier General Ishmael Ben Quartey, who acted after the former Managing Director, Mr Noble Appiah, and his deputy, Mr John Awuku Dzirash, were asked to step down following agitations and allegations by workers of the MMT against the then board and management.
Worker agitations
Workers of the MMT staged a demonstration on January 12, 2015, where they accused the management and board of the company of mismanagement.
They also protested against the management for failing to comply with the procurement processes and other internal regulations.
As a result of the protest, the board was dissolved and an audit conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers Ghana Limited at the instance of the sector ministry later revealed that there had been lapses in the procurement processes of the company.
Among others, PricewaterhouseCoopers Ghana Limited recommended the restructuring of the company in order to put effective systems and control measures in place to address the fundamental systematic issues confronting it.
New MD
The Minister of Transport, Mrs Dzifa Attivor, who confirmed the appointment of Mr Ligbi in an interview yesterday, further disclosed that a new board Chairman, Mr Leslie Tamakloe, had also been appointed.
She said Mr Ligbi, who is scheduled to start work on Monday, August 3, 2015, would be expected to implement the recommendations of PricewaterhouseCoopers Ghana Limited to bring a new lease of life to the MMT.
The key recommendations, she said, included minimising, if not eliminating, the revenue leakages, putting in measures to keep the buses on the roads and introducing e-ticketing systems.
Mrs Attivor, therefore, called on the workers to work hard to support the new managing director to achieve efficiency and improve the turn-around time of the company’s operations.
Mr Ligbi’s profile
An associate member of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers, UK and the Institution of Engineers, Ghana, Mr Ligbi holds a Master’s Degree in Engineering Business Management from the University of Warwick, UK.
