Accra Regional Police prepare for TUC demo
The Accra Regional Police Command yesterday organised a mock exercise in preparation for the planned demonstration by members of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) tomorrow, January 20, 2016.
The exercise was used by the command to make policemen who would be deployed to maintain security during the demonstration aware of what would be expected of them on that day.
Speaking at the event, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare, tasked the personnel to exhibit the highest form of professionalism during the demonstration.
Caution
He cautioned them not to use tools and gadgets which had not been sanctioned by the Police Administration for crowd management.
“You must understand that our duty is to protect those who will be demonstrating, make sure that those who will not take part are able to go about their activities peacefully and also control vehicular traffic. We must, therefore, execute these duties very diligently and in a professional manner,” he urged.
Dr Dampare served notice that anybody who had the intention to use the demonstration to disturb public peace and order would face the full rigours of the law.
Demonstration
Organised labour announced on January 15 that members would stage a nationwide protest on January 20 against hikes in utility tariffs and petroleum prices.
The decision was taken after an inconclusive meeting it had with a government delegation at the Flagstaff House on January 14.
