Police arrest doctor accused of sodomy

The police have arrested the medical doctor said to have sodomised a 16-year-old senior high school student.

According to DSP Cephas Arthur, who is in charge of Police Public Affairs, Dr Sulley Ali Garbass was picked up Wednesday afternoon in Takoradi.

The police had extended an invitation to him (Garbass) to report to assist in investigations.

When he reported at about 2pm, he was arrested.

He has since been handed over the Criminal Investigations Department, which has transferred him to Accra.

Though no formal complaint has been filed, the Police say that acted to arrest Garbass because the allegations against him bordered on criminality.

Sodomy

Dr Gabass is said to have sodomised the student (name withheld) on five occasions - three times in his vehicle and two times in the doctor’s house at Alajo in Accra.

He is said to have offered the victim money after the first act, which the victim claimed he declined and  subsequently deleted the doctor’s number on his phone.

But the doctor, the victim claimed, called him with another number that if he failed to oblige to his sexual demands, he would “send people after him” and also blackmail him on Facebook.

Apart from experiencing anu-rectal complications that saw him undergo surgery at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the victim is said to have been diagnosed with HIV.

Doctor admits acts

According to a Joy FM news report, Dr Gabass, on the other hand, admitted that he had anal sex with the victim on a number of occasions but denied that he was the source of the HIV infection.

He also admitted that he dreaded the outcome of the case going public because he was a high-profile personality with a beautiful wife and two children. 

We are acting without a formal complaint

The police on Tuesday told the Daily Graphic they were acting upon information in the media and that if a crime was being committed, they cannot wait for someone to come and lodge a complaint before they act.
