UCMAS 2018 attracts more schoolchildren

This year’s National Competition of the Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS), held at the Burma Hall in Accra, attracted more than 800 schoolchildren.

It brought together participants from over 50 basic schools in the Greater Accra Region and other regional centres in the Brong Ahafo, Western, Ashanti, Volta, Central, Eastern and the Northern regions, which run the UCMAS Programme.

The 9th edition of the competition was on the theme: "UCMAS, Quality Total Brain Development for our Future Leaders, a Decade and Beyond".

At the opening ceremony, the National Director of UCMAS, Mr Girish Gurbani, said the aim of the annual event was to develop the brain of children during the formative years of four to 14.

The pupils and students who participated in the competition were taken through brain power drills, calculation, speed, accuracy and proficiency in Abacus and mental Arithmetic skills.

At the end of the competition, the winners were presented with certificates, trophies and cash prizes for their performance.

Mr Gurbani added that the benefit of the programme included improved photographic memory and listening skills, concentration, confidence, imagination skills, outstanding creativity, speed and accuracy, arithmetic skills and all-round academic proficiency.

He said: “We hope to boost the confidence level of children, enhance their listening skills, and strengthen their creativity.”

He added that “we also believe that the UCMAS total brain development programme forms a good foundation for our children in the 21st century.”

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UCMAS, Mr Roger Ohemeng, called on stakeholders to work towards the successful organisation of the 10th national competition, which comes off next year, 2019.
