UCC Medical School wins public speaking contest
The University Of Cape Coast School Of Medical Sciences placed first in a competition recently held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for students of public medical schools in the country.
Contestants spoke on the topic: “The strengths and weaknesses of the current mental healthcare system” and “suggest improvements or propose a new mental health mode if you think the current one is not good enough”.
The UCC (SMS) representatives made up of Abigail Naa Ayetey Harding and Araba Abakah Fordjour displayed a high level of knowledge of medical issues and confidence and came tops with 170 points followed by the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS)137, KNUST(SMS),130 and the University for Development Studies (SMS),117.
The Chairperson for the competition was the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, KNUST, Prof. E. T. Agbenaza.

The judges were Prof. J. B. Asare, Chairperson of the newly constituted Mental Health Board; Dr Mark Roberts, Head of the Kintampo Project; Dr K.Adai Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, KNUST; Prof. Yaw Adu-Sarkodie Dean of the School of Medical Sciences, KNUST and Dr Akwasi Osei and Northern Regional Psychiatrist representative from Regional Health Directorate.
For their prize, the winners will undertake a fully sponsored elective placement in Psychiatry at the St. Patricks University Hospital, Dublin.
