Making your New Year’s resolution stick

Making your New Year’s resolution stick

It can be daunting when your list of New Year’s Resolutions is as long as your holiday shopping list. In addition to the post-holiday slump, not being able to keep your resolutions by February, March or even late January may increase your anxiety.

When your holiday decorations are packed up and stored away, the frustration of an unused gym membership or other reminders of failed resolutions can make the later months feel hopeless.

However, it is important to remember that the New Year isn’t meant to serve as a catalyst for sweeping character changes. It is a time for people to reflect on their past year’s behaviour and promise to make positive lifestyle changes.

Ten qualities of people with high emotional intelligence

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to have an unlimited amount of success in both their personal and professional lives? It could be because they possess high emotional intelligence.

According to Psychology Today, "Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others." This usually involves:

Emotional awareness, which includes the ability to identify your own emotions as well as those of others;

The ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks such as problem solving;

What that little pocket in your jeans is really for

Five ways to cut down fuel cost

These days, the most watched part of cars in Ghana is the fuel gauge. The reason is not farfetched. The recent 27 per cent increase in petroleum prices has compelled every car owner to try and save money on fuel.

But did you know that your driving behaviour can actually influence your fuel use by as much as 25 per cent? Here are some tips to help you out.

Don’t be a lead foot. Putting the “pedal to the metal” wastes fuel because the harder you accelerate the more fuel you waste. Press the accelerator pedal gently. A good rule of thumb for optimal fuel efficient driving is to take about five seconds to accelerate your vehicle up to 24 kilometres per hour from a stop. For a manual transmission, use a moderate throttle position and shift between 2,000 and 2,500 revolutions per minute (RPM).

The popularity of WhatsApp Group Chats has grown beyond measure

WhatsApp groups: a necessary nuisance

Incessant   messages from a WhatsApp Group Chat can be irritating, especially when the conversation is of no relevance to the receiver but it looks like the WhatsApp groups have become the fastest and easiest way to receive news and other forms of information.

Unlike Twitter, Facebook,Instagram and other social media platforms where users have to log in to check updates, notifications from a WhatsApp group pop up immediately they are sent; all the user needs is an active data connection.

General information and jokes about fairly recent topical issues like the Anas video on the judges and the  ex-Guantanamo Bay detainees in Ghana spread with incalculable speed mainly through Whatsapp group chats, thereby  igniting a lot of conversations among users.

Rev. Anchebah with his family after a dinner over the weekend

Rev. Clement Anchebah: Shepherd of souls

Some people travel to  their National Service stations and return with various baggage; either they desert their stations, get married, or leave behind many unwanted stories, babies not the least.

Others become change agents who leave indelible footprints several decades after performing that civic duty to the State.

Rev. Clement Anchebah belongs to the latter. Having been posted to the Upper West Region after completing his course at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), he decided to kill two birds with one stone.

He decided to practise the animal husbandry programme he pursued at the university, and for which reason he had been posted to that station in the first place, and also to preach the gospel to his people.

Fernando Verdasco: The daredevil

One tennis star who would do just anything to raise money for charity is Spanish player, Fernando Verdasco.

The 32-year-old was noted to have stripped naked for a photoshoot to raise awareness for male cancer in what many believed would generate some controversy between him and his girlfriend, Jarah Mariano.

Instead, his blond girl friend gave her blessing to the Spaniard’s act and he further won the heart of Andy Murray’s mum, who admitted her admiration for the player.

Members of the Tokyo Zentai Club meet at a park in Tokyo. Like just any group, they meet up every other month to hold barbecues or parties. Unlike any other group, they are covered head-to-toe in skintight Lycra

Lycra suits answer to everyday life pressure

In a bid to de-stress and break free from the tensions of daily life, Japanese students and professionals are taking to a bizarre trend called ‘Zentai’.

It’s a community consisting of people of all ages and walks of life, donning full-body lycra suits and meeting on internet forums, in clubs, at barbecue parties, and sometimes just on the street.

It’s ironical, but the tight suits are actually able to help stressed individuals loosen up, because such behaviour is probably frowned upon in genteel circles.

Many of the Zentai perceive the trend as a welcome break from the pressures of living in Japanese society that values conformity to tradition over individual desires.

“My family is conservative,” said university student, Yukinko, a member of the Zentai club.

“They like me to be quiet and feminine, but in secret I wear all over tights and let loose. I’m a different person wearing this. I can be friendly to anyone and feel as if I can do anythi

Guys: 8 signs she is the one (Don't screw it up!)

If you’re trying to figure out whether it’s love you’re feeling, here are 8 signs that those three little words might just be in order.

Moisturiser is a good idea, but it doesn’t have to be expensive

Do I really need to cleanse tone and exfoliate?

Your skin functions as a protective barrier, preventing pollutants and microbes from entering, and too much moisture from escaping. Using a cleanser to remove dirt and excess oil is a good idea in principle, but removing too much oil can be damaging. Soap and water is too harsh for most skin types, so use a gentle moisturising cleanser instead.

Although toning implies an improvement in skin quality, many dermatologists consider it unnecessary. Similarly, although exfoliating may leave your skin feeling smoother in the short term, if – like around 50% of the UK population – you have sensitive skin, it could aggravate it.

“You would never hear a dermatologist telling you to cleanse, tone and exfoliate,” says Wal Hussein, consultant dermatologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and a spokesman for the British Association of Dermatologists. Neither are exfoliators much good for blackheads; pores that have become clogged with oil and dead skin cells.

Why wedding ring is worn on the forth finger of the left hand.

Do you know why we wear wedding rings on the fourth finger of the left hand?

Everybody knows that in the UK, alongside most countries around the world, the wedding ring is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand.

But have you ever stopped to ask yourself why we do this? Or where this tradition came from?

Well, it all actually started before medical science first discovered how the circulatory system actually functioned. Before the discovery, stemming from a Tudor belief from the 16th-century, people believed that a vein ran directly from the fourth finger on the left hand, all the way to the heart.

Lots of people walk through life trying to hide their depression.

6 Secret Signs of Hidden Depression

Lots of people walk through life trying to hide their depression. Some people with hidden depression can conceal their depression like pros, masking their symptoms and putting on a “happy face” for most others.

People with concealed depression or hidden depression often don’t want to acknowledge the severity of their depressive feelings. They believe that if they just continue living their life, the depression will just go away on its own. In a few cases, this may work. But for most folks, it just drags out the feelings of sadness and loneliness.

Dealing with the black dog of depression through concealing one’s true feelings is the way many of us were brought up — we don’t talk about our feelings and we don’t burden others with our troubles. But if a friend or family member is going through something like this — trying to hide or mask their depression — these signs might help you discover what they’re trying to keep concealed.

Daily beauty ritual increases self-esteem in women, boosts love life

A daily beauty ritual can improve women’s love life and can make them feel good about themselves, a new study by Revlon and Fordham University reveals.

The participants in the Revlon Love Study followed a simple ritual which included facing a mirror every morning, using a favourite perfume, applying make-up, savouring a sweet, taking a deep breath and looking at yourself and smiling.

The findings of the study — that involved hundreds of women — showed that 97 per cent of the women showed a positive change within the first week of following this daily ritual, Destinyconnect.com reported.

“Rituals can be powerful — performing them can actually change the way you feel. Taking time each day to appreciate yourself — especially what makes you unique — is a simple but effective way to create positive energy,” Tracy Rohrbaugh, vice-president, marketing at Revlon was quoted as saying.
