The reading clinic was organised for students in the church and some children in the Klagon, Bastonaa, Lashibi and Kotobabi communities.

The President of the Women’s Fellowship, Madam Gifty Mills, said in an effort for the church to have a positive impact on society, the fellowship intends to set up a community library to encourage children to study and explore the world through books.

She said the group had started a literacy class in the local languages, namely Asante Twi, Ga, Ewe and Fante with the children which would be extended to adults to encourage them to read and understand the Bible and other books in the local languages.

The Secretary of the Women’s Fellowship, Mrs Monica Kumahor, in an interview with the Junior Graphic, noted that this was necessary since it would help promote literacy and help enhance the academic performance of the children.

“Whoever is literate is also numerate. Children are not doing so well in Mathematics these days and the reason behind this is that most of them do not read. We want our children to read because, we know the numerous benefits that can be derived from reading,” she added.

A resource person, Mr Vincent Nartey, a tutor at the Chemu Senior High School, took the students through various workshop sessions to boost their reading skills which would promote literacy.

He appealed to the pupils to cultivate the habit of reading, and also study hard to make good results in their examinations in order to brighten their chances of progressing to higher levels of education.
