Ugandan gender minister jokes about attractive refugee women

Following the announcement that refugees fleeing the Taliban are to be hosted in Uganda, the country's gender minister has joked about attractive women being among them.

"I have seen our Ugandan men praying for safe landing of Afghanistan refugees, and sharing various photos of ladies as below," Betty Amongi said on Twitter.

"They are promising total support and cooperation with the government this time on this project! Hope it's not [the] Stingy Men Association," she added, in reference to jokes online about dating etiquette.

Some online laughed along with her but others found it inappropriate, given the grave fears many have for the treatment of women and girls under the Taliban regime.

Ms Amongi told the BBC that she was merely reacting to other people's comments on social media, and her tweet was meant in jest.
