Plane crash kills at least 14 at Nigeria airport

Rescuers peer into the wreckage of a jet at the Lagos airport in Nigeria on Thursday.Lagos, Nigeria (CNN) -- A plane carrying 20 people crashed on takeoff from Nigeria's Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos on Thursday, killing at least 14, an official said.

Six people survived, said Muhtar Usman, commissioner with the Nigerian Accident Investigation Bureau.

The flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder have both been recovered in the wreckage of the Embraer 120, he said.

The Associated Airlines flight had been slated to travel to Akure, Nigeria, said Yakubu Dati, a spokesman for the federal airport authority.

Among the passengers were relatives of the late former governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu, who were accompanying his body on the flight, Nigerian state-run TV broadcaster NTA reported.

Agagu was a former aviation minister in Nigeria.

The 30-seat passenger plane burst into flames when it crashed about 9 a.m., the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency said.
