Reginald Okantey from Osu defeated Samuel Antwi 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to win the 2019 National Tennis Ranking Tour 1 Championship held at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Despite dropping a point to lose the first set 6-4, Reginald, 17, came back strongly to win the second and third sets to take home the coveted trophy, souvenirs from sponsors as well as the bragging rights.
The one-week tournament, organised by the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF) and the Tennis Foundation Ghana (TFG) with sponsorship from Babolat Sports, saw Antwi won the first set in an hour and 15 minutes and was looking forward to carry the day but Okantey bounced back brilliantly to shutter Antwi’s dream.

“I am still in shock. I felt like the match was not completely done but it was done. It’s one of those moments when you are fighting so hard and then when it’s finally over, you are still in the state of competition,” said an elated Okantey.
Last month, Okantey, an International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Africa Junior Championship (AJC) participant, was crowned winner of the 2018 McDan Boys Under-18 Championship. He also won the professional category at the 2018 Accra Senior Open Championship held at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club.
For his part, runner-up Antwi said: “I could not believe I just played a final of a GTF/TFG National Ranking again. For me it was a great honour to make it to the final. “It was a great game and I congratulate Okantey for coming out victorious.”
Okantey walked away with a pair of shoes, tennis bag and a set of tennis apparel from Babolat Shop while Antwi took home a tennis bag and a set of tennis apparel.
