2019 Africa Games: GTTA invite 49 players for national trials

The Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has released a list of forty-nine (49) players, made up of thirty (30) males and nineteen (19) females for the upcoming national trials to select players for the African Games scheduled for Morocco in August this year.

The list includes regular players such as Derek Abrefa, Felix Lartey, Bernard Joe Sam and Emmanuel Commey who together won bronze for Ghana at the last African Games in Congo Brazzaville.

Junior and Cadet players who excelled during the World and African Junior Championships held in Accra in April also made the list. They are left-handed penholder Joseph Amissah, Augustine Baidoo, Desmond Osei, Samuel Hagan, Godwin Nyarko Aseku and Daniel Tawiah.

In the female category, current Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Player of the Year and World Championships participant, Celia Baah-Danso has been named alongside experienced colleagues Cynthia Kwabi, Eva Adom-Amankwaa, Mrs. Hilda Asare and Eva Ampah.

Junior and cadet players such as Augustina Baidoo, Millicent Ankude, Matilda Fodu, and Diana Opoku have also been invited for their tremendous improvement in recent times.

10-year-old mini-cadet player Emmanuella Yaa Kyere, who is ranked 411 in the ITTF Cadet category was also invited.

According to the Media Officer of the GTTA, Mr Nathaniel Somuah, the justifiers will be in three stages with the first stage scheduled to come off from July 3 to 5.

Mr Somuah said the second stage will take place from July 10 to 13 while the final stage will come off from July 17 to 18 at the D. G. Hathiramani Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium.

“It will afford them an opportunity to prove themselves and offer them a chance of breaking into the senior national team,” he said.

The trials will be under the supervision of national coach, Anthony Owusu Ansah.
