The male and female handball teams of Volta Zone on August 1 claimed gold at the ongoing Colleges of Education Sports Association (COESA) Games at the campuses of the Tamale College of Education.
While the male team, led by captain Nelson Kakraba, beat their counterparts from Eastern/Greater Accra (EGA) zone by 19-15 in the final game, the female side won 13-9 against their Ashanti/Brong Ahafo (ASHBA) representatives for the top prize.
The Volta male team defeated Northern Zone by 22-15 in their opening match, drew 20-20 with Ashanti/Brong Ahafo, won narrowly by 20-19 against Central/Western Zone before thrashing EGA in the final game.
The female side also opened the competition with a 17-15 win over Northern Zone, beat Central-Western 18-14, thumped EGA 13-3 before snatching the ultimate from ASHBA yesterday.
"When it comes to COESA Games, handball belongs to Volta because we won it in 2012 and 2014 but we lost it to EGA in 2016 and we are back for it this year.
“We are so happy that for the first time our zone has won both trophies and as you can see my players were determined and desirous to win so they worked hard," said Dodzi Otis Ahorsey, coach of the Volta Zone handball teams, .
Meanwhile, ASHBA Zone female team claimed the top spot in the table tennis competition which ended last Tuesday at the Bagabaga College of Education while the Volta Zone male team have won the male category.
In volleyball competition, Eastern/Greater Accra Zone female team will face their Northern counterparts in the final game today, while ASHBA clash with Northern Zone in the final of the male competition.
