Royal Ladies of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) won silver after losing 0-1 to Sharkia Ladies of Egypt in the final of the Africa Cup for Club Championships (ACCC) hockey tournament in Ismailia in Egypt on Sunday December 8.

Police Ladies also claimed bronze after defeating Kada Queens of Nigeria 3-2 in the third place match last Sunday.

The competition, which began on December 1, saw the Royal Ladies play their hearts out in the final match but eventually lost the trophy at stake to the host, Sharkia Ladies, ending their dream of winning gold in the highly-competitive tournament.

They were, however, compensated with the Best Player of the Tournament award which went to versatile defender, Baayembim Brenya.

Seven female teams including Police Ladies, Kada Queens and Yobe Queens of Nigeria, Shams of Egypt and El Sheri’s of Sudan converged in Ismailia to compete for the prestigious trophy which Sharkia Ladies won for the first time.

Conspicuously missing were the defending champions, Telkom Orange Ladies from Kenya.

On their way to the final, Royal Ladies settled for a pulsating 3-3 draw in their opening match against Sharkia Ladies and went on the rampage by dismantling Yobe Queens of Nigeria 10-0 before defeating Kada Queens also from Nigeria by a lone goal.

Police Ladies, who were considered among the favourites, accounted for Shams of Egypt 2-1, beat Yobe Ladies 2-1, dismissed El Sheri’s 9-1 and lost 0-3 to Sharkia in the fourth match.

When Ghana hosted the tournament two years ago in Accra, Royal Ladies won gold with Police winning bronze.
