The National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced that 192 athletes will participate in this year’s annual National Cross-Country competition at the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District in the Central Region on February 22.
According to the Technical Director of the NSA, Mr Abeku Wilson, 96 male and 96 female athletes from the various regions are expected to take part in the 20km race.
Addressing the media at the launch in Accra yesterday, Mr Wilson called on inhabitants of the Enyan Essiam District in the Central Region to own the competition, which he noted, would bring economic improvement on their lives.
He revealed that the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Isaac Asiamah, will grace the occasion and present certificates and trophies to winners of the competition.
“We are looking forward to ensuring that the event goes well in order to help unearth more talents for the country in international competitions,” Mr Wilson said at a media briefing in Accra.
Revamping sports in the district
For his part, the Director General of the NSA, Prof. Peter Twumasi, said his outfit was committed to revamping all sporting disciplines within the district and was ,therefore, hopeful the cross-country competition would set the tone.
Prof. Twumasi said the NSA was ready to provide safety measures for athletes who will participate in the competition and ambulances have been made available to that effect.
