The head coach of Ashantigold Sporting Club, Charles Kwabla Akonnor, has expressed surprise at the club’s decision to push him to the back burner till the return of the technical director, John Christensen, from abroad.
The management of the club yesterday asked the assistant coach, Yakubu Mambo, to take charge of the team, while awaiting a response to Coach Akonnor’s query for failing to report to work last Friday when the club resumed training.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Graphic yesterday, Akonnor explained that his absence was as a result of an urgent appointment he had with the German Embassy last Friday.
“The team resumed on Thursday and we were supposed to train on Friday, but I had an appointment at the German Embassy which delayed me and I told them I will be in Obuasi on Friday so I was surprised that they sent a query asking me to explain my delay and stay away till the white man returns”, Coach Akonnor stated.
In his amazement, the ex-Black Stars skipper said although he trained with the team on Monday, June 25, he had to comply with a directive from management to step aside from Tuesday, June 26.
He added that he accordingly responded to the query. “I have responded to the query which came as a surprise to me but I will still stay away as they directed”, the former Bundesliga star, who saved Ashgold from relegation last season and has transformed the club to the second spot this season, revealed.
Meanwhile, the CEO of the club, Frederick Acheampong, has confirmed that the club has received a reply to the query letter to Coach Akonnor and had asked him to step aside while management subjects his conduct to scrutiny.
“We have given him a query letter and asked him to step aside while we go through the process and wait for the Technical Director to arrive,” he said.
