GCB embarks on breast cancer awareness walk

Staff of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) has embarked on a sensitisation walk as part of activities to create awareness of breast cancer.

The walk was to caution customers and the general public about the impact of breast cancer on both men and women.

It was on the theme: “Together we rise”.

The walk started around 7:30 am from the GCB headquarters in Accra last Saturday and ended about 9am at the Accra-North branch of the bank, located around Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

The participants displayed placards some of which read, "men can get it too", "early detection saves life", "get screened today", among others.

Speaking after the session, the Deputy Managing Director of the bank in charge of Operations, Emmanuel Odartey Lamptey, said the event was part of the banks corporate social responsibility (CSR), which was focused on education, health, among others.

He said the CSR allowed the bank to contribute towards social development goals in the country.

"So we have set ourselves with the 2,400 staff that we have in GCB to spread across the country to contribute to the awareness creation in their homes and communities," Mr Lamptey said.

He explained that from the beginning of the month of October, the bank engaged in an internal awareness creation at all its branches nationwide by speaking to the staff about the disease.

Mr Lamptey noted that the activities were informative as they shared experiences and lessons on how to focus on healthy lifestyles, "a walk being one of them and eating healthy.

"People are our greatest assets and so, when focusing on causes like this, we have a work place environment which is very strong in terms of employee value preposition", he added.

Expansion

The Chief Medical Officer, GCB, Dr Humphrey Narh, said the walk was a form of exercise to help them keep fit and was done once every quarter of the year.

He expressed the hope that in the coming years, the exercise and awareness creation, through free screening, would be extended broadly to the general public.

"We would sponsor and extend it to the public, for instance, the Makola Market, where we would screen the women. That is what we are aiming at", Dr Narh stated.
