Can you hear the Angels sing?

The book ‘Can you hear the Angels sing?’ is not fiction. It is history.

The excellent review of this book in the Ghanaian press by Dr Andrew Charles requires to be read again for a summary of what happened at 1.20a.m. on October 6, 2010, which makes me want to add a sub-title to the book to make it read “Can you hear the angels sing?: Shot And Left For Dead!”. I take special note of the last paragraph of the review of Dr Charles, who is Senior Elder of Alexandra Road Congregational Church, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England (accessible from www.arcchemel.org.uk and clicking ‘NEWS’):

“The remarkable testimony given in this book to the grace of God in devastating circumstances should be of particular interest to us because the traumatic events in Ghana occurred during the time when Professor Ayettey’s daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Ebenezer, were living in Hemel Hempstead and in fellowship with us at Alexandra Road”.

Angels

I have two reasons for postponing comment on Rev. Professor Ayettey’s autobiography till Christmas time: (a) The first Christmas had angels in great prominence – the announcement to Mary, the virgin, of what was going to happen; the reassurance given to Joseph to whom Mary was betrothed; Elisabeth, her cousin, being led into the secret; announcement to the shepherds of the birth of the baby Lord Jesus; giving the significance of that extraordinary star that guided the wise men from the east; warning about wicked Herod’s intention to kill baby Jesus so “flee to Mizraim”; Herod is dead so return, etc.

(b) The second reason stems from the first, namely to state, in no uncertain terms, the reality of the supernatural. Clever people have been deceived into thinking that something called Science has dismissed the supernatural. Professor Ayettey has a doctorate (PhD) in Medical Anatomy from Cambridge University. Dr Charles has a doctorate (DSc) from London University and was awarded the British Geotechnical Society Prize in 1993, and the Institution of Civil Engineers awarded him the George Stephenson Medal in 1985 and the Geotechnical Research Medal in 2000. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1999. Dr Charles is a world authority on large dams, including Akosombo! Then I also have a doctorate from University of London, in Medicine. And there is no need to remind Ghanaians of recent and past awards. We all (Ayettey,  Charles, and I) acknowledge the existence of angels!

Suprascientific realm

Those clever Ghanaians, who are inclined to dismiss Professor Ayettey’s book, had better be careful. Do not laugh at his description of the occult which he describes from pages 198 to 201 which he was nearly lured into at the time he was in boarding school. There is nothing in Science that can explain juju, talismans and lavender water, divination (the dark spiritual powers), and there is nothing in Science that can explain holy angels singing at Korle Bu. These things are suprascientific (above Science). There are Christians today who do not believe in Adam and Eve. “It is all myth,” they proclaim. Listen carefully: Andrew Charles, and Ayettey and I acknowledge Adam and Eve as historical fact. How many Professors of Anatomy in the world today believe in Special Creation? Ayettey does, Charles does, and so do I. We all repudiate Professor Richard Dawkins and his apostles as belonging to the group of scientists that I once described in the British Medical Journal as “whistling in the dark to keep their scientific courage up”.

Please get this book and read it. And then worship. Tears rolled down my cheek when I read the scene of the little girl standing behind her father as she looked on, when he was shot. I wept as I imagined the scene. Get the book and read it. And this very Christmas, please repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ because your very breath (and my very breath) depends on Him. He came to save sinners – what a wonderful message! Repent, and give yourself to Him.
