
EDITOR'S LENS: In memory of Mawuli Semevo
The Ghanaian entertainment industry has lost a creative giant. The sudden and tragic passing of veteran actor Mawuli Semevo has sent shockwaves through the nation, leaving fans, colleagues and loved ones to mourn the loss of a true legend.
Semevo's impressive body of works over the years showed his exceptional talent and versatility. From the stage to the silver screens, he brought characters to life with his commanding presence and distinction.
These exceptional qualities were aptly defined in many productions but one which readily comes to mind was when Mawuli played the role of Baba Fakunle in the adaption of Ola Rotimi’s ‘The gods are not to blame’ by Image Bureau and April Productions staged at the National Theatre last year.
Undoubtedly, his collection of movies shows who's who of Ghanaian cinema, with standout performances in movies such as ‘Harvest at 17’, ‘A Stab in the Dark’, and ‘Like Cotton Twines.

But Semevo's impact went far beyond his own performances. He inspired a generation of actors, writers and directors, helping to shape the very fabric of Ghanaian theatre and film industry. (Read also: Veteran actor Mawuli Semevo dies from fire accident complications)
His dedication to his craft, his passion for storytelling and his commitment to excellence raised the bar for everyone around him.
Until his retirement, Mawuli Semevo was the director of National Drama Company, one of the three resident companies of National Theatre.
The circumstances leading to Semevo's passing are particularly heartbreaking. He sustained severe burns from a domestic fire accident, which occurred at his home on February 7 which later took his life at the Ridge Hospital where he was on admission on February 20, 2025.
The outpouring of tributes and condolences from across the industry shows the high esteem in which he was held.
