IWD 2025: Empowering women

Today, March 8, marks International Women's Day, a global celebration of the achievements of women and a call to action for gender equality.

This year's theme, "For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment," emphasises the need for collective action to unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all.

Ghana joins the global community in commemorating this day, reflecting on the progress made and challenges that lie ahead.  As Ghana celebrates International Women's Day, it is essential to recognise the critical role that women play in shaping the country's future.

One of the key areas where progress has been made in recent years is in women's representation in leadership roles. We have seen more women rising to positions of power in politics, business and various fields, challenging traditional notions of leadership and bringing diverse perspectives to the table

Women are the backbone of the Ghanaian society, contributing significantly to the economy, education, healthcare and community development.

However, despite their vital contributions, women in Ghana continue to face significant challenges that hinder their full potential.

The Daily Graphic believes that to truly empower change, we must continue to advocate gender equality in leadership and ensure that women have equal opportunities to excel and succeed.

This means addressing systemic barriers, promoting mentorship, sponsorship programmes and creating a culture of inclusion where women feel supported and valued in their professional pursuits.

One of the most pressing challenges facing Ghanaian women is gender-based violence. According to the Ghana Demographic and Health Survey, one in three women has experienced physical or sexual violence.

This pervasive problem not only harms individuals but also perpetuates a cycle of fear and oppression that stifles women's progress and potential.

Another significant challenge facing women in Ghana is economic empowerment. Women are disproportionately represented in the informal sector, lacking access to credit, markets and social protection.

This limits their ability to start and grow businesses, invest in their families and contribute to the national economy.

To address these challenges, it is essential to adopt a multi-faceted approach that involves the government, civil society and individuals.

The government must prioritise policies and programmes that promote women's empowerment, such as increasing access to education and economic opportunities.

Civil society organisations must continue to advocate  women's rights and provide support services to women and girls.

Individuals also have a critical role to play in promoting women's empowerment. Men, in particular, must recognise the importance of gender equality and challenge traditional notions of masculinity that perpetuate violence and oppression.

As we work together, we can create a society that values and respects the contributions of all individuals, regardless of gender.

Empowering women is not only a moral imperative, but also an economic necessity.

When women are empowered, they invest in their families, communities and countries, driving economic growth and development.

According to the World Bank, every dollar invested in women's empowerment generates a return of up to $7.

As Ghana celebrates International Women's Day, it is essential to recognise the progress made and the challenges that remain.

We must recommit ourselves to working towards a future where women and girls have equal opportunities to succeed and reach their full potential.

By empowering women, we can build a more inclusive, equitable and prosperous society for all. Let us stand together in solidarity and take action to empower change, creating a brighter future for Ghana and generations to come.

In addition to addressing systemic issues, the Daily Graphic further believes that it is also crucial to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in various fields and sectors.

From science and technology to the arts and humanities, women have made significant advancements and breakthroughs that have shaped the world in profound ways.

As we celebrate the day, we must recognise the progress made and the challenges that remain.

We must also recommit ourselves to working towards a future where women and girls have equal opportunities to succeed and reach their full potential.

By empowering Ghanaian women, we can build a more inclusive, equitable and prosperous society for all.
