Tropo Farms delivers healthy tilapia

From medieval times, tilapia has been a delicacy in Ghanaian dishes. Whether grilled or dried and salted into “Koobi”, fish has long been recognised as a healthy dish, and has been a partner to most staple foods in Ghana.

Today, tilapia has become a delicacy recognised worldwide for its delicious flavour, nutritional value, and affordable price. Particularly attractive to consumers is its nutritional value.

Substituting tilapia for red meat is a way for people to reduce fat and cholesterol in their diet. According to the US Department of Agriculture, tilapia has a third of the saturated fat found in red meat, and 27 per cent less cholesterol.

It also contains healthy Omega 3 fatty acids, which help lower cholesterol and reduce inflammation.

Today, Ghana is home to Tropo Farms (TF), the second largest tilapia farm in Africa. It is the only aquaculture company in Ghana that can supply tilapia six days a week, 52 weeks a year. Its Volta Catch brand tilapia is all natural, with no antibiotics or preservatives.

They are grown in a natural environment in the deepest part of the Volta Lake, far from polluted urban areas.

The company uses only the local Ghanaian variety- Oreochromis niloticus- and the fish is fed with natural feed, so that the original Ghanaian taste is preserved.

When one buys TF’s Volta Catch tilapia, one is sure of its safety. Unlike imported tilapia, with Volta Catch you know how and when your fish was grown. With imported tilapia, you have no idea the conditions the fish has been through during production, harvesting, and transport.

However, TF makes every effort to maintain freshness; using literally hundreds of tons of ice to preserve a total cold chain from lake to market- they even use Thermoking refrigerated trucks so the fish is fresh during transport.

It also takes good care of its operational areas and sales points, ensuring a hygienic environment, equipment and all other materials used in the value chain.

Tropo Farms knows the importance of working closely with local communities- the company employs over 800 staff, maintains community roads, provides boreholes, supports housing,  skills  and training.

In addition, TF indirectly creates over 700 jobs, particularly for our market women. These market women get continuous supply of tilapia for their trade all year round.

This December, Volta Catch is opening an agency programme to allow more Ghanaians to retail Volta Catch tilapia- a win- win for Volta Catch and the citizens of Ghana.

The programme will create opportunity for Ghanaians to retail Volta Catch tilapia, using the Volta Catch brand to ensure quality, freshness, and affordability.

Over the next five years, TF plans to increase production to approximately 10,000 metric tons a year of local Ghanaian Volta Catch tilapia.  In the interim, Volta Catch will open outlets in at least five regions of Ghana, while later, in all ten regions .

The objective of TF is to provide delicious, healthy fish to help people live happy, healthy lives.

That's why it is offering huge discounts this Christmas to encourage every home to eat and enjoy tilapia this Christmas. This is the philosophy that has driven the company’s success so far in Ghana.
